Design audit for MSC Cruises's flagships
As the owner representative our duty was to take a good look of the suggested designs and try to look for better solutions when possible. Altering a single cabin could mean changing thousands of pre-fabricated modules and to effect the journey of countless guests for numerous days. This is why every millimeter and every alternation and every layout approved is done with great care.
WHAT
As a new generation of flagships is about to be built a final touch is given to proposed designs and layouts throughout the ships. Due to the fact several architectural offices are working on different areas of the same vessel, a bottle neck for design audit is formed before dispatching the blueprints to the shipyards and factories. Even minor changes are crucial when we keep in mind each cabin may be replicated thousands of time over several vessels.
WHERE
MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seaside were the first two vessels to run a design audit over the blueprints proposed by the various architectural offices involved. with an overall of 7,500 beds in each ship the necessity for efficiency while not compromising comfort is needed.
HOW
Going over the blueprints with fresh eyes brings something new to the project. Blind spots, created by design and redesign of the same area, are none existing and small error or better solutions are easily visible.

Layouts are audited and 3D models are created to better understand the superposition of the systems hidden in the walls and bulkheads. With this information the flexibility of the space is clear and adjustments are possible.

Presented to the clients are layouts, 3D models and photo realistic renderings of the different areas and situations of each space.

MSC Cruises is a global cruise line that was founded in Italy, is registered in Switzerland, and has its headquarters in Geneva. MSC Cruises is the world's largest privately owned cruise company, employing 16,300 people worldwide and having offices in 45 countries as of July 2014.

In 2015, MSC Cruises had four new ships on order from STX France and Fincantieri, with options for three more. The first two ships are due to be delivered in May 2017 (MSC Meraviglia) and November 2017 (MSC Seaside). There are four more diesel-powered ships on order for delivery.
